Storyline

On the eve of a bank holiday, Wallace and Gromit are having trouble deciding where to go.
When they discover they’ve run out of cheese, they realise that they must to go to the moon – because as everyone knows, the moon’s made of cheese.
Once they’ve got there, with the help of Wallace’s new rocket, they start to feast. Unfortunately, they are soon chased off by the cooker traffic warden.
Leaving him with his lifelong dream – a pair of scis.

Title sequence

A wobbly camera showing Wallace and Gromit’s deckchair, camera, and a picture of cheese hanging on the wall.

Notes

·                On December 30, 2006, the short received another BBC One repeat. The information transmitted alongside falsely revealed that the animation was made in 1998, nine years off its real date.

Did you notice...

Yet when they land on the moon, they use the same paint-stained ladder to get in and out of the ship.

Later, when it shows the house of cards a second time (and Gromit has already finished the second level), the first level now has four triangles and the second layer has three.

Reviews

Sebastian Hamilton: The first Wallace and Gromit does have shaky animation, but feels just wonderfully handmade.
The story is also slower paced than the rest, but for one person – and at college, it is a marvellous achievement.

Script

Peeling Wallpaper is placed upon the wall. A deckchair, camera, and picture of cheese hangs on the wall.

Wallace and Gromit are sitting in their armchairs. Gromit is reading his book (Where to Go), whilst Wallace is flicking through ‘Picnic Guides A-Z’, and
 twiddling his globe.

Wallace: Eeh, these bank holidays. It's a problem to decide.

Gromit: dozing off Zzzzzz...

Wallace: Tell you what, Gromit, lad.

Gromit wakes up suddenly

Wallace: Let's have a nice hot cup of tea, hmm? Walks out of the room kettle should've boiled by now.

Places the tea pot and a plate on a tray. He spreads the biscuits out on the plate.

Opens the fridge door and looks inside. There is an empty plate with a note saying cheddar cheese.

No cheese, Gromit.

Gromit looks sad

Not a bit in the house!

He walks back into the living room with the tray. Wallace eats an empty biscuit.

Gromit, that's it! Cheese! We'll go somewhere where there's cheese!

Gromit looks exasperated

Wallace: flicking through ‘cheese holidays’ Now where were we...? Places you find cheese... Lancashire, Cheddar, Wensleydale, Philadelphia, Tesco's...

Both suddenly stop looking through the books. They glance up out of the window and see the moon.

Wallace: Everybody knows the moon's made of cheese.

ACT 1: SCENE 2
The Cellar

Dripping sounds

A mouse is sniffing around the floor. Suddenly a door opens at the top of the staircase. Wallace turns a light on and walks down to his drawing board.
He ponders for a short while. He sharpens his pencil, and then starts scribbling down madly. He ponders, and the flips the sheet over and starts again.
We see his is just playing noughts and crosses. Finally he flips over the sheet and starts drawing a plan of a rocket. He draws a cartoon Wallace and
Gromit inside and draws it taking off.

There then follows a building sequence as Wallace and Gromit build a rocket.

ACT 1: SCENE 3

Gromit is at the controls of the rocket. Wallace walks in through the door. He fiddles with the controls and places the headphones on his head.

Wallace: Everything seems to be under contro-o-ol! He has walked away, and the headphones have bounced back.

Wallace drops down the ladder and lights the fuse

Wallace: climbing back into the rocket 60 seconds to blast-off. Gromit starts the countdown

He ponders

Hmm... Oh! Allotment doors!

The ground outside their house starts rumbling. Suddenly it opens to reveal the rocket underground.

Wallace starts thinking frantically. He searches through his bags and suddenly realises the horrifying truth.

Wallace: No crackers, Gromit! We've forgotten the crackers!

Wallace sprints up into the kitchen

Wallace: Hold on, Gromit! Hold on!

He throws open the cupboard door revealing layers of crackers. He grabs them all and runs. The clock is counting down from 10. Wallace jumps
into the rocket and screws the door closed. The clock reaches 12 and they prepare for takeoff. Nothing seems to happen. Suddenly there is tremendous
rumbling. The mice in the cellar don sunglasses.
Gromit pulls a lever and the rocket blasts off.

Wallace: GRRRROOOOOMMMMMMMMIIIIIIIIITTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!

The rocket blasts steadily toward the moon.

ACT 2: SCENE 1

Inside things are also calming down. Gromit is playing with a pack of cards. Wallace is reading his newspaper. Gromit starts to build a tower of cards. Getting
a little bored, Wallace decides to take a picture of Gromit.

Wallace: One for the album!

Suddenly a machine starts whirring.

Wallace Huh?

A slice of toast pops up

Oh! Nicely done.

He eats it. A claxon sounds. Wallace looks out of the window.

Wallace: Oh!

The moon is appearing. Gromit signals that Wallace should have a look at the moon and get ready for landing.

Wallace: Adjust angle of thrust he does so.

Steady now. Easing up.

Gromit is desperately trying to hold up the tower of cards.

Steady!

Gently does it. He pulls the break.

The tower collapses.

The rocket lands upon the moon.

ACT 2: SCENE 2

The duo step down and take a walk. Wallace kicks a football up, and it doesn’t come back down.
The duo settle down on their tablecloth

Wallace: Nice drop of tea to get the tastebuds going.

Mmm! Ah!

He sets up for his food, demanding things like a Doctor.

Wallace: Plate. Knife. Cracker.

Wallace cuts a piece of cheese from the moon, places it on his cracker and starts to eat.

He places some cheese in a bowl labelled ‘Gromit’.

Wallace: Hmm... See what you think.

Wensleydale? Gromit shakes his head Stilton? Gromit shakes his head  I don't know, lad. It's like no cheese I've ever tasted. Let's try another spot.

ACT 2: SCENE 3

Wallace and Gromit are walking along the moon. Suddenly they spy a cooker. Wallace walks up to it and inserts 10p. He fiddles around with it a bit trying to
make it do something.

Wallace: Come on, stupid...

A piece snaps off

Oh!

Daylight robbery! They always nick your money. Them flippin' machines. Come on, Gromit.

Suddenly the cooker registers 10p. Hands shoot out of the side. He stretches, adjusts his aerial, gets out his telescope and looks around. He spots the duos
 ‘camp’. Shocked, he starts moving.
At their ‘camp’, the cooker starts rummaging through their possessions. He reads ‘ski tours’ and starts dreaming of skiing. He realises that they have been
cutting apart the moon. He sticks it back on to it’s original place.
He then starts off again, before crashing into the rocket. He is very angry about it and therefore writes a parking ticket for it.
When he sees that it is dripping oil, he scans about  for the owners. Then he spots Wallace and Gromit walking on the moon – apparently looking for more
cheese. Dipping into his draw he brings out a club and starts brandishing it.
He draws closer and closer to Wallace and Gromit. Coming up behind Wallace, Gromit gets very worried.

Wallace: Hmm... It's different.

The cooker lifts up his club, but just as it is coming down on Wallaces head, the cooker runs out of power.

Wallace: Hmm... Camembert?

He lifts himself up, and hits his head on the club.

Ooh! Oh!

He spots the cooker, takes its club and puts more coins in. As he walks off however, Gromit gets very worried and runs straight past him.

Wallace: Where’re you off to now? Leave me to carry the basket!

The cookers meter goes back up to 10p. Angry at his last failed attempt to get Wallace, the cooker looks up above the rocket and sees that it’s going to go
to earth. Remembering this may be his last chance to try skiing, the cooker starts running toward the rocket. Wallace, thinking he’s after the cheese, races
up into the rocket. The cooker, with no legs, cannot climb the ladder. Racing around the rocket, Wallace and Gromit are rushing to blast off and away.

Wallace: Emergency countdown! Ten seconds and counting!

The cooker uses a tin opener to cut his way into the engine area.

Wallace: Hold tight, lad, and think of Lancashire hotpot.

The countdown clock reaches 12, and nothing happens. Meanwhile, the cooker nocks over a pipe, and fuel starts pouring out. He lights a match to see what’s
happening.

Wallace: Oh! The fuse! You forgot to light the fuse! moans

The match suddenly explodes the fuel and the rocket starts blasting off.

Wallace: Woah!

The cooker tries to hold on to the rocket, but eventually gets blasted away. The rocket takes off toward earth.
Left alone on the moon, the robot starts to cry. He suddenly realises that the two long pieces of rocket he is still holding can be used as skis. We see him
skiing on the slopes of the moon looking very happy. He waves up to Wallace and Gromit, who wave back from the porthole.

Settled back inside their rocket, Wallace brandishes his cheese and cracker at Gromit.

Wallace: Set co-ordinates for 62 West Wallaby Street.

He eats more of the cheese and cracker as the rocket blasts of to earth.
